She was an avid basketball player while in school. After graduating from Awasa School, she thought about becoming a flight attendant, but in those days, you had to become a nurse. I went to Mercy School of Nursing in Marshalltown. In her basketball days, she met the love of her life, Bob. The two were married on September 14, 1946 at Little Brown Church. They had been married for over 66 years at the time of his death. They were quite the couple, always together unless they were working. Education was very important to her, and she went on to take classes to earn her B.S. Over the years, Alice has used her nursing skills in many ways; Doctors’ offices, hospitals and veterans homes in Iowa. Alice has received numerous awards, including recently receiving a Lifetime Achievement in Nursing Award. When she was not working, Alice remained active in various ways including cake decorating, helping out on the farm, tending to her flower garden and fine embroidery. She was a long-time member of the Iowa Church of the Brethren, where she served as a nursing class teacher. She was a great mother, a great person, strict at times, and very smart. Even though she and her daughter bickered often, she will be missed, and it is a blessing to know that she had a wonderful life and is with Bob now.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents, six brothers and two nieces.
She will be missed by her daughter, Vicki (Jerry) Miller, of Ankeny, two granddaughters; Tara (Adam) Palmiotto, of Sioux Falls, SD, and Megan (Ryan) Kennedy, of Shielddale, IA, and two grandchildren, Katelyn and Tanner Kennedy, of Shielddale, along with four nephews and one niece.
