Since some of the daffodils are already starting to bloom now, it’s probably pretty clear that February is not February ideal The right time to plant daffodil bulbs. But the question is whether it is possible to plant daffodils in February.
So we put this question to our gardening experts to see what their advice is on the matter. This is what they came back with.
Can I plant daffodils in February?
Planting bulbs in January actually cuts them off, let alone leaving them until February. But it turns out that while this isn’t ideal, you can still plant daffodils in February, according to gardening pros.
“You can plant daffodils in February here in the UK, as long as the threat of frost has passed for the year,” says Steve Shelton, garden expert at LeisureBench. “I wouldn’t recommend planting in February if snow is scheduled to fall, or if temperatures are still freezing,” he warns.
Planting daffodils in February is especially recommended if you have some remaining bulbs as they will not last until the next planting season in the fall as the usually recommended planting period is between September and November.
Steve is a passionate and knowledgeable garden expert with many years experience in the field. As Director of LeisureBench, a leading manufacturer of garden furniture, Steve has developed a strong expertise in all things nature and plants.
“Daffodils should be planted in autumn or early winter. If you miss this window, it’s not too late to plant them in February,” says Fiona Jenkins, gardening expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk.
“If you have bulbs available, it is better to plant them than to let them go to waste because they may still be able to take root and bloom with proper care and attention. Even if the bulbs do not flower this year, they should bloom as usual the following year.
This way, you can start making your lasagna a year ahead of time.

What happens if you plant daffodil bulbs in February?
“If the ground is frozen, daffodils may have difficulty establishing roots,” Fiona explains. “However, if you plant them a little deeper, this may protect the bulbs from freezing.”
“A good layer of mulch will also help to insulate the bulbs and retain moisture. Flowering may also be a little later than usual and may have fewer flowers due to not having a strong root system. The flowers may also be smaller than usual.
What is the last month to plant daffodil bulbs?
The ideal time to plant daffodils is from September to November, and December is the last date recommended by gardening experts to plant them.
“I recommend planting them in early December at the latest. As long as you plant them before the first frost of the year, you’re planting them at the right time,” Steve says.
But if you end up planting your bulbs in the new year, they still have some catching up to do.
“Daffodil bulbs can be planted in late January but bulb establishment and flowering may take some time after planting. However, they will catch up eventually,” says Petar Ivanov, horticulturist and plant expert at Fantastic Gardeners.
The bottom line is that whether you have scattered bulbs or are feeling adventurous, plant those daffodils in February and see what happens. It could be a huge success.
