How and when to divide hostas – the most important tips for these plants |

Hostas are great additions to the garden and are easy to grow – as long as you keep away the slugs and snails that like to nibble on their leaves. A popular ground cover plant that thrives in shade, it is much loved for its ornamental foliage that comes in a range of colors and sizes, depending on the variety. Many of them also offer summer flowers in white or light purple hues.

Because these are long-lived perennials, they may become crowded over time and their performance may diminish as a result. The solution is to divide hosta plants and replant the sections into separate areas or containers in your garden. The process is simple, as this guide explains. Since it's also a way to propagate these plants, you'll feel like you're getting new plants for free.
