This article explains how to quickly find clay in Minecraft.
The best place to find clay
The resulting clay naturally appears as a solid gray mass. Mud is most common in green caves and in shallow water. Along almost any riverbank, you’ll find a mixture of sand, dirt, and mud. Since version 1.14, clay spreads even in savannah and desert areas in shallow water areas. This means that clay can be found in every biome, from swamp to desert.
The clay is not specific to the y-axis because it is generated at every height. It attempts to post 46 times per block and can be found in groups up to 160 blocks in size. It is also possible to find clay in a few other locations, such as:
- In the villages under Fisher’s huts
- Mason Villager Homes
- Decorate the interior of a random villager’s house
- It is carried by a hostile crowd
If you want to search specifically for Lush Cave biomes, these are often generated under Jungle and Dark Forest Biomes. Green Caves never appear below a savanna, plains, or jungle. Overgrown with greenery, the underground caverns are filled with plants and shallow pools, and mud lumps are abundant in these pools. If you’re hoping to get your hands on multiple blocks of mud, Lush Cave Biomes are the best places to explore.
Clay tips and tricks
Clay is easy to find and easy to extract, but with a few tips, you can become a clay expert.
- Clay can be extracted with anything, including your hand. A golden or Netherite shovel will mine clay at full speed.
- The mined clay block yields four balls of clay.
- If you want to extract the clay block and keep it intact, you can use the enchanted Silk Touch tool.
- The clay balls can be stacked in groups of 64 and can be turned back into clay blocks using the crafting table.
- Clay blocks are also stackable up to 64.
Rare places to find clay
Sometimes mobs like Endermen carry blocks of mud that they drop if you kill them. In the Java version, Mason Villagers have the ability to gift a piece of clay to a player with Hero of the Village status. Clay blocks can be created as part of village structures, such as stone-cutting houses or hunting huts.
How to make clay
In recent versions of Minecraft that include Dripstone, it is possible to craft clay.
- Place the clay on top of another block.
- Place a tapered Dripstone at the bottom of the block.
- Clay will eventually turn into slush.
In this case, Dripstone uses its water to make slurry and doesn’t drip any water into the boiler.
How to grow clay
To create your own clay farm you will need clay and a stepping stone. Clay can be made by hitting dirt with a water bottle, which will give you a use for all the water bottles you fish out at sea. Pointed Dripstone can be found at Dripstone Cave Biomes.
- Place a block. (No Dripstone needed, but it’s a nice touch.)
- Under the block, set a pointed dripstone.
- Place a block of clay on top of the original block. After a while, the slurry block will become slurry.
Clay can also be found in the Mangrove Swamp Biome in large quantities to build giant mud farms. Remember that when using Dripstone to make slurry, it will not drip into the cauldron as it normally does.
Things you can do with clay
There are multiple uses for mud besides stabilizing river banks. Clay blocks can be used like any other building block, but there are also some specific uses that relate only to clay.
Brick
Clay balls can be fired in a kiln to produce bricks. Once the bricks are made, they can be placed on the crafting table to produce brick blocks or flower pots.
It takes three bricks in the crafting table to make one flower pot, and each flower pot can contain one flower or plant for decoration. Brick building blocks are made by making four bricks at a time. Brick blocks are not only decorative but also durable and sturdy like other stone blocks. Brick blocks can be cut into slabs and stairs as well.
Make a sheet of paper and bricks together to produce the “Masonic” crest pattern.
Clay
Although clay is abundant in the Badlands, it is rarely found anywhere else. If you want some clay and don’t want to wander around the world looking for it, you can make your own from clay.
- Place a block of clay in the oven.
- Melt it with any fuel.
- This will produce one block of regular terracotta.
Regular terracotta blocks can be dyed any Minecraft color. These include red, orange, yellow, lime green, green, sky blue, light blue, dark blue, purple, lilac, pink, white, light grey, grey, brown and black. Not only can the dyed clay be used in buildings, but it can also be baked into glazed clay using a kiln, just like clay found in the wild.
Make flute music
If a block of clay is placed below the note block, the flute sounds. The flute is one of 16 different musical instruments represented in Minecraft. Each machine can also play 25 different pitches.
common questions
Does clay have to be generated underwater in Minecraft?
No. Although most mud will be generated under shallow water, it can also appear above the water level. Generally, it will not be far from the water source.
How can I turn clay balls into blocks of clay?
It’s easy to extract the clay and then decide it would take a lot of inventory to hold all those clay balls.
• You can use the crafting table to turn four balls of clay back into a block of clay without losing any of the clay in the process.
• You can extract a block of clay again and turn it into balls of clay if you change your mind.
• There is no limit to the number of times you can move back and forth between clay blocks and clay balls.
Is the clay stackable?
Yes, both clay cubes and clay balls can be stacked of up to 64 items. Therefore, you can carry more mud at once by stacking blocks of mud.
Does good luck affect Clay?
No, regardless of the lucky charm, Clay Blocks will always drop four balls of clay. The only exception is if the mining tool used is enchanted with “Silk Touch”, in which case the entire block will be mined rather than broken into by clay balls.
Is clay a good building material?
Clay isn’t particularly strong or resilient against creeping blasts, so it’s best to shape it into bricks or terracotta if you want to build something sturdy. It’s a lovely building material if you’re interested in blending into a gray landscape.
Find clay in Minecraft
Clay adds interesting visual variety to river shores in Minecraft, and is also useful for many decorative purposes. It’s easy to find and easy to transform to give construction projects that extra flare.
Melting clay balls to create red brick buildings or fireplaces adds a strong, classic look to your projects. Cook a whole block of clay for clay, add a little pigment, and a boring building will be transformed into a colorful sculpture. Another walk through the kiln, and you can create a multitude of colors of polished terracotta to add artistry to your masonry designs.
Mud may seem unassuming and easy to find in rivers, but it holds a wealth of creative design ideas.
