One of the primary selling points of artificial turf is that it is meant to be low maintenance while remaining green all year round.

That appeal no longer existed in this particular case after someone took the mower to the lawn and realized their mistake when it was too late.

The post, which received more than 1,000 upvotes in the subreddit called r/Whatcouldgowrong, was captioned simply, “Mowing the lawn with artificial grass.”

While trimming the artificial grass was a huge mistake, the number one mistake was installing it in the first place.

Artificial turf, for all its supposed advantages, still requires watering to help keep it cool during hot summer days and remove any odors caused by pet urine.

Plastic in grass is also petroleum-based, as petroleum is a dirty energy source that contributes to global warming. This plastic can then leach microplastics and other toxic chemicals, causing further harm to humans, animals and the surrounding biosphere.

The preferred option for fake (and real) grass is to install native plant turf, which is better for your wallet and the environment.

Since native plant species are climate-adapted and therefore do not require additional maintenance, they can help reduce water, fertilizer and pesticide costs. It is estimated that native plants could save customers $2,750 and 1.75 million gallons of water over the course of a decade.

Furthermore, introducing native plants can serve as a habitat for pollinators, which are essential to a thriving ecosystem.

Creatures like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are all pollinators that help keep plants healthy and thriving — including the plants we consume.

Drought-resistant plants, such as clover and buffalo grass, are also effective alternatives to artificial turf – even if it’s only a partial replacement.

As for the half-trimmed plastic lawn, the original poster explained that it wasn’t their fault.

“This is a neighbor’s house a few doors down from mine. It’s been like this for a year, and I laugh every time I pass by,” they said.

The comments section joined in on the fun and didn’t criticize.

“That’s a loose definition of weed, my friend,” one user replied.

“Well, look on the bright side. You only have to do it once,” another joked.
