Joan Evelyn Bowie Maynard, 80, of Ten Mile, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.

Joan was born on June 21, 1943, in Lewiston, Michigan, to the late Clifford and Evelyn Bowie. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1961. She began her nursing career, graduating from Central Maine School of Nursing in 1964. In 1966, she married the love of her life, David Maynard, and continued her nursing career at Parkview Memorial Hospital. In Brunswick, Maine, where she worked for 35 years, she served as a hospital nursing supervisor and was responsible for writing policy and procedure manuals. Joan and Dave, with their three beautiful daughters, also ran a small farm.

Joan enjoyed bird watching and gardening, especially flower growing. Each of her three daughters was married in her own flower gardens in Maine. She also loved hiking in Maine, especially the White Mountains and Green Mountains of Vermont, and more recently the Great Smoky Mountains and Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee. For many years she also cross-stitched, ceramics and decorated cakes over the years as well as traveling the world, including several trips to Australia to visit her daughter, husband and grandchildren. She enjoyed camping and hiking with her daughters growing up. She was elected to and served on the SAD 75 School Board where she served her community when her children were young.

Of all her hobbies, the one she enjoyed most was spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them about nature, flowers, and insects. At age 76 I started kayaking.

In 2003, she and Dave moved to Kingston, Tennessee where she continued her nursing career in the emergency room at Rowan County Medical Center until her retirement in 2015, where she also spent a year as an emergency patient advocate before her retirement. She has been a volunteer at Meigs Ministries since 2003, and for the past few years has been a volunteer at the Decatur St. Mary’s Clinic. Mary’s Legacy Clinic. Joan was a missionary for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Athens.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Clifford and Evelyn Bowie and her grandson: Devin Michael Stevens.

Survivors include: her husband David, daughters: Christine J. Lackey and husband Terry of Ten Mile, Monique A. Lackey of Ten Mile. Stevens and her husband, Dave, of Kingston, and Julie L. Sagnole and husband David of Warrnambool, Australia, son: Harland Stanley of Topsham. , Maine, siblings: Robert Bowie and his wife, Geraldine of Phippsburg, NJ, Ronald Bowie and his wife, Wendy, of Punta Gorda, FL, and Richard Bowie and his wife, Erin, of Maine, FL, grandchildren: Alexis and Larissa Lackey, Blake and Tyler Stevens, and Jeremy, Jamie, and Nathan Sagnoll. , Lily and Ellie Stanley, great-grandchildren: Abigail Waters, Addison DeRussia, Silos Alves, numerous nieces and nephews, and other extended family members.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 30 at 1 PM at the Decatur Funeral Home Chapel and Cremation Services with Michael Jackson Chaplin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that live plants be sent or trees planted in honor of Joan’s memory.
