Obituary of Joseph Dewey Blackburn
He was born on March 20, 1984, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to parents Chad and Marilyn Blackburn. He was welcomed into the family by his older brother, Nathan Chad, and three older sisters, Nyla, Shaunelle and Emily, and was blessed with his little sister Shelley six years later. Growing up in southeastern Idaho, he had access to endless resources and opportunities to satisfy his curiosity for life, his love of nature and his obsession with reptiles.
As a teenager, he set school records in track and field, loved to ride BMX bikes and enjoyed snowboarding, snowboarding, mountain biking and hiking, and especially enjoyed teasing his brothers.
On May 10, 2003, Joseph married the love of his life, Rachel Ann Helison. They made Iona their home and raised six beautiful children: Carter Dewey, Colleen Joseph, Kimball Cole, Crow Charles, Cara Ann and Chloe Vilatte.
He found great joy in helping others and was always talking about changing the world and making a difference. One of his favorite phrases recently was: “You know everything’s going to be okay, right?”
He loved his family dearly, especially his wife and sweet children. Always a child at heart, he shared that gift with those around him and found much joy in playing with his children. He also loved serving with his wife in the church’s primary nursery.
Joseph was amazingly talented and sought perfection in any project or job he undertook. He became an excellent craftsman, and as an exemplary team, he and his wife designed and built their beautiful home in Iona. He took great care in construction and added an artistic touch to all the finishing work, especially the beautiful cabinetry, fireplace mantel and trim.
Being in nature with his family and friends was his favorite way to spend time. We are so grateful for all the unforgettable memories of good times, pranks and endless adventures. His smile and laugh lit up the room, and his hugs were so adorable.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, their six wonderful children, his mother, and his five siblings.
His father preceded him in death.
