Police arrested 3 men after confiscating 2,600 marijuana plants from Machia’s home

Police raided a large-scale illegal marijuana operation in Machias on Thursday, arresting three Asian men and seizing more than 2,600 plants and 100 pounds of processed cannabis.

The raid was notable because of a possible connection to a massive China-linked marijuana cultivation network that has popped up among regular properties along the Interstate 95 corridor over the past three years. It was the first to be raided in Washington County.

Machias Police Chief Keith Mercier said the maquias plant was growing inside a house and two large barns at 414 East Kennebec Road in a rural area of the city. His agency raided the property at 9:30 a.m. Thursday with the assistance of the FBI and other federal drug and immigration agencies, along with state agencies and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
