It was the romance of French flower gardens and markets that led Emily Fountain to work as a florist.

“It was during my original trip when I was traveling in France, doing cheap things and doing cheap things, that I came across these beautiful French gardens and flower markets. I just loved them and thought it was really romantic,” Emily said.

“The reality of being an apprentice florist is not very romantic, cleaning buckets and scrubbing floors,” she laughed.

But Emily kept her dream alive and this week opened Pom Pom Florals on Hastings’ booming east side, on Heretaunga Street, next door to Ya Bon.

“I’ve been eyeing this group for a while, and when a space became available, I jumped in. I love the vibe and the great shops around me. It’s a classy, modern space and I’m really happy to be a part of it.”

Emily says that although her work as a florist in New Zealand may not be as romantic as France, she still loves it.

“I’ve been doing this for nine years now and I feel very lucky to be doing something I love. Going to work is never a chore.

“The thing about flowers is that they bring joy to so many people. Yes, there are sad occasions, but even then flowers can be uplifting,” Emily said.

Boom Boom Florals is more than just a florist. It is a boutique gift shop offering exquisite bottles of gin and wine, beautiful pottery and a selection of goods perfect for gifting.

There is also beautiful artwork by Abby Merson displayed on the walls and a selection of dried flowers.

The newly renovated store is attractive and modern.

“We’re so happy with the way it looks. Our first day was incredible. We’ve been really busy and I’m thrilled,” Emily said.

“It’s a bit scary when you do something new but we decided to do it. My plan now is to build my brand locally.”

Pom Pom Florals uses locally grown flowers and foliage from Hawke’s Bay and New Zealand.

“When we order from wholesalers outside Hawke’s Bay, we never use internationally imported flowers if there is an option from New Zealand.”

When Emily was asked what her favorite flower was, she said that was a difficult question.

“It depends on the season for me. I love dahlias, stocks, ranunculus, peonies and proteas to name a few.

And her advice on how to care for your bouquet?

“Do as I say, not as I do,” she laughed.

“Always change the water every day and cut the stems every two days. It’s that easy.”

Emily says that while sourcing goods for their store, they do their best to support local businesses.

“We hope to expand our offerings in the very near future.

“In the meantime, come in and say hello.”

As for Emily’s bouquets…believe me, she is very talented…she is amazing.
