Houseplants have been proven to help unsuspecting American homeowners and renters fight mold.

Mold is a major financial and health liability, and consumers are using all the tools available to prevent it, including greenery that requires little maintenance and can be found for less than $30 at The Home Depot.

Depending on how serious it is, mold can cost you a pretty penny to get rid of.

Some mold removal companies will charge around $2.50 per square foot, while other estimates range between $10 and $25 per square foot, according to Forbes.

However, the best way to deal with mold is to try to prevent it first, and that’s when the plant comes into its own.

Chris Bonnett of GardeningExpress.co.uk explained: “Mold in the home is caused by excess moisture. Warm rooms, such as bathrooms and kitchens, are particularly at risk.

“Using plants to help prevent mold is a practical, natural way to control humidity in your home.”

In other words, some plants reduce the humidity in the room, which is responsible for mold, by absorbing moisture through their leaves.

Bonnet recommended several plants that have been scientifically proven to reduce mold.

The US Sun found it sold for less than $30 at Home Depot.

1. Spathiphyllum peace lily plant

Although the peace lily is found on the damp rainforest floor, a potted version can be found at Home Depot for $20.47 to decorate the nooks and crannies of your home and absorb mold spores in the process.

Just be aware that its leaves are toxic if consumed by pets.

2. The majestic palm plant

Home Depot says the Majesty Palm makes an “excellent focal point or backdrop in any home or office,” but it’s also $29.97. It’s on sale, down 21% from $37.81.

The plant is easy to care for but requires “lots of sunlight and moderate to heavy watering.”

The kimberley plant will decorate your home with sword-shaped leaves, but the leaves are not limited to elegance.

Native to tropical South Africa, spider plant is known to remove harmful pollutants in the home.

The hottest on this list, orchids add a more floral pattern to your home while still improving air quality.
