Spending more time indoors due to the coronavirus pandemic means we’re all looking for ways to spruce up our interiors, and there’s one trend in particular that’s been steadily popping up in the homes of some of our favorite Instagram accounts.

Feathery, ethereal and affordable, we’re of course talking about pampas grass.

While dried flowers were undoubtedly one of the biggest interior design trends of 2020, it’s these long, decorative stems that have really gained major traction, with more than 312,000 posts under the hashtag #pampasgrass on Instagram. It has also infiltrated other elements of our lives, appearing at product launches, decorating our favorite stores and hotels, and even becoming a favorite destination for bohemian weddings.

In fact, the herb has become so popular that some councils in England have had to issue warnings to residents not to pick pampas grass, after people were caught stealing it from coastlines and front gardens.

But why is the Pampas enjoying such a boom? After losing popularity in the 1970s when rumors spread that viewing the plant meant you were a prostitute, it has gradually found its way into our homes due to its versatility and long-lasting nature.

Not only can the plant’s neutral colors and decorative stems be easily incorporated into any interior design style, whether boho, glam, industrial or rustic, but it is also very practical. Because they are dried, pampas do not need light or water, and unlike plastic foliage, they will not harm the planet either.

If you want to give your home an Instagram-worthy makeover but are wondering where to buy the best pampas, you’re in luck. We’ve put together our selection of great places to buy premium grass now.

You can trust our independent tours. We may earn commission from some retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are shaped from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps fund our journalism The Independent.

(Dear little one)

Little Deer started in 2013 as an online platform for independent designers. The brand, run by Alice Searle, has opened a store and workshop just outside Brighton, launching its own range of homewares designed and handcrafted in-house.

It stocks a range of furniture and accessories, but in recent years has also become a one-stop shop for all your dried flower needs. And yes, that includes pampas grass.

The website has a wide range of pampas that can be ordered online and shipped in protective cardboard tubes to ensure they arrive in pristine condition. If you’re looking for extra-fine stems, we recommend opting for the extra-large set (£38), which includes three neutral stems. Alternatively, add a splash of color to your home with this set of blush pink pampas (£42).

Three Sisters Farm is a business born during the pandemic, the brainchild of Philippa and Jessica, who, after being laid off from their jobs, took a leap of faith and created their own shop specializing in sustainable dried flowers.

As well as beautiful dried flower bouquets (from £22), Three Sisters Farm sells a wonderful range of pampas grasses to suit all tastes. For the more adventurous, there are blue and pink stems (£15), while long, slender bunches (£20) are a subtle way to introduce dried flowers into your home.

However, our top pick has to be this delicate brown set (£35) which includes 10 stems and will make a lovely centrepiece.

Etsy is a veritable treasure trove of independent sellers, and the place to go if you want to get some pampas while supporting small businesses.

While there are hundreds of vendors to choose from, one of our top picks is The Pampas Life, which creates dried flower and grass arrangements that can also be made to order. We love this set of mini white pampas (£10) to add to decorative vases, but you can also pick up larger stems too, like the delicate pampas (£25), which includes three 60cm stems.

Other great vendors to look out for include Kanda & Co and The Baked Flower Bar.

As well as decorative furniture and lighting, the site has a number of options for pampas lovers, including its delicate columns (£45) which come in a set of three and are, by far, the most delicate columns offered by Cox & Cox. If you prefer your pampas on the slimmer side, we recommend the brand’s Large Pampas Stems (£30), which also come in a set of three and measure an impressive one meter long.
