Work on rebuilding Canal Shores Golf Course, which began in June, is close to reaching its goal.

The Evanston-Wilmette Golf Course Association Board of Trustees and its construction partner, Wadsworth Golf Construction, have made significant progress in A project worth $5.9 million Last summer and fall.

Within 124 days, beginning with permit approval, a youth training complex was constructed, new golf courses were dug into the landscape, and previously existing holes were improved. The last day of construction was November 15, and the field has been reseeded.

“The opening of the course is weather dependent, but we are hopeful that the golf holes north of Central Street will open in July 2024, and that the full course will be open after Labor Day 2024,” said Matt Rooney, Chairman of the Golf Association Board of Trustees.

The property includes three government units: The land is owned by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District and leased to the city of Evanston and the Wilmette Park District, which in turn subleases it to the golf association. A complex permitting process has delayed the reconstruction work, so the potholes south of Lincoln Street will need to be reseeded in the spring.

Rooney stressed that the non-profit association’s board of directors is “responsible for fundraising and the construction project” in cooperation with… Kemper Sports Management, who is appointed to manage course operations. “Board member Chris Charnas, chair of the construction committee, is overseeing all elements of the construction project,” Rooney said.

Reconstruction has achieved some Major changes to the course, with the new layout designed by Todd Quitno of Quitno Golf Designs.

“Although we have greatly improved Canal Shores, the basic nature of the trail will not change,” Rooney said. “We also have a goal for Canal Shores to remain affordable and accessible.”
